Background

Started in 2002 in Langrick, Lincolnshire by Andrew Wallis, Boston Seeds are independent seed merchants, and were one of the first companies in the UK to start selling grass seeds and wildflowers on the internet. This first website was launched in 2003 achieving annual sales of £600. The company established its own distribution centre in 2008 and the following year, TJS started its long association with Boston Seeds with the development of a bespoke ecommerce site for them. By 2014 annual online sales exceeded £1,000,000 for the first time.

The Brief

Andrew, along with his son George, was ready to invest in an updated iteration of the website and investigated the possibility of other developers providing them with a ready-made, e-commerce platform. 18 months later, it became apparent that the functionality required of the website was beyond the capability of the off-the-peg platform.  Subsequently, Boston Seeds asked TJS to design and develop their new site, using the expertise of our developers that had served the company well for over 11 years.

Our Solution

The public-facing elements of the fully responsive site were given a Google-friendly framework, to allow Boston Seeds to develop their ongoing search engine optimisation. In addition to developing the site with all the elements required to satisfy Google requirements, TJS built in all the essentials for social media and shopping platforms. Customer navigation has been improved with a horizontal navigation menu so that customers can find their way easily around the site.

Apple pay was fully integrated into the website, joining PayPal and Google Pay as an extra credible payment gateway for customers at the secure checkout. The standard card checkout has also been simplified so orders can be completed fast and efficiently.

Additionally, Boston Seeds decided it was time to revamp their existing logo to give it a fresh, updated look. This new branding has been rolled out across the site and will be used in all marketing materials.

Following on from the site launch, Boston Seeds’ internal development team will be able to amend and update content in-house, via the content management system.

We are proud of our successful and enduring relationship with Boston Seeds and happy that our bespoke e-commerce platform has given them a website that places them firmly in the top 5% of well-functioning websites.
