E. H. Thorne (Beehives) Ltd is a fourth generation family business operating from 5 locations around the country. With head offices in Lincolnshire, not far from where Edgar Henry Thorne built his first beehive in 1913, the company is today the leading manufacturer and supplier of beekeeping equipment in the UK.

The Brief

The company wanted to provide a service to their customers that allowed them to create their own bespoke hives. As their existing off the shelf ecommerce site was unable to provide the flexibility needed to support this next step, the company approached TJS for a solution.

Our Solution

Drawing on our previous experience in the development of bespoke product configurators for such solutions as bespoke mountain bike wheel builders, and garment design engines for industry leaders in the workwear sector, we have developed a new, bespoke site featuring a beehive configurator. The bespoke hive builder offers customers a user-friendly way of configuring their own bee hives which meet their individual requirements, within their specified budget. In the future, we look forward to developing a bespoke honey jar label generator for the website using our previous experience with Labels International

In addition to the fully functional ecommerce site which now features a digital and physical gift voucher system, the company has the ability, via the content management system, to schedule product Sale Events to start and end automatically during pre-determined periods throughout the year. The CMS also provides E. H. Thorne (Beehives) Ltd with a comprehensive facility to manage and promote their highly popular beekeeping courses and events.

Since the launch of TJS’s bespoke website, there have been impressive improvements across all the key metrics; conversion rates are up by a staggering 120% over the previous website, the volume of transactions is up, leading to an increase in revenue, unique purchases are up, Adwords conversions are up, time on site is increasing and, very importantly, bounce rate is down an impressive 35%.
