Background

Geological disposal provides safe, long term solutions for the disposal of radioactive waste, which is currently stored at above-ground storage facilities. As this is not viable in the long term, a geological disposal facility (GDF) is a permanent alternative storage solution where nuclear waste is kept underground in solid rock, in a network of tunnels and vaults.

Theddlethorpe in Lincolnshire was chosen as a possible site for a GDF and The Theddlethorpe GDF Community Partnership was formed as a result. The partnership aims to give local people a platform for discussion – to raise awareness and voice any concerns – and ultimately to explore whether a GDF is right for the local area and community. A GDF cannot be built unless the community is willing.

The Brief

The Theddlethorpe GDF Community Partnership coordinated a series of film themed Q&A events called The Big Picture, where specialists in the field were available to talk to community members. The Big Picture visited multiple locations throughout the search area and the partnership was looking for imagery that reflected the various events. The images would be used in marketing materials for the partnership including both printed and digital media.

Our Solution

Our inhouse photographer attended 7 Big Picture events, where he shot images that showcased how the Theddlethorpe GDF Community Partnership was communicating and liaising with the general public. The venues varied from local, old village halls to contemporary, purpose-built rooms with each providing different photographic opportunities as well as challenges in terms of lighting. Working closely with the event coordinator, our photographer orchestrated shots to maximise the potential in each background and to highlight branding at its best.

The result was a set of images that captured the two-way conversations taking place between the public and the partnership, that were press-ready to be used across all marketing materials.
